Featuring a VALPOP session on the connection between geopolitics and public goods

The Institute for International Business at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) is organising an online Paper Development Workshop on Geopolitics, Strategy, and International Business, which will take place online on 23 September 2025. Business scholars are invited to submit papers by noon CET on 25 August 2025.

With geopolitics increasingly reshaping the global business environment, the workshop provides a platform to explore the profound implications for firms, strategies, and business scholars. Topics range from deglobalisation dynamics and strategic responses from multinational enterprises to methodological innovations, ensuring wide relevance for researchers interested in the evolving global order. The workshop aims to foster vibrant scholarly dialogue and offer targeted feedback to support the development of research.

Beyond traditional paper presentations, the program features a Senior Faculty Plenum on geopolitical phenomena, a Round Table on methods, a VALPOP project showcase, and a Curiosity Lab session for community-driven exploration of exciting new work. Senior faculty members will lead discussions and provide detailed guidance during the sessions.

The purpose of the VALPOP session is to discuss the connection between geopolitics and public goods. On the one hand, geopolitical tensions and pressures against globalisation in general may arise from public perceptions of public-goods capture by “global” or “foreign” elites. On the other hand, populist leaders may exploit geopolitical tensions to rally popular support and skew the distribution of public goods in their favour.
